Spring Home Check-Up
Winter is finally on its way out, and it’s time to get reacquainted with the outside of your home. This past winter may have taken a toll on your home’s exterior while you were hibernating indoors. Winter weather can be hard on windows, gutters, foundations, decks, and other exterior surfaces. Use the following checklist for your spring home check-up to inspect your home’s exterior and make any improvements necessary to have your home ready for springtime and warmer weather.
Check the Gutters and Downspouts
Remove any leaves or debris that have accumulated over the winter. Check to make sure gutters and downspouts are in proper working condition. Re-secure where needed, or contact a professional for replacement.
Inspect Exterior Walls
Check exterior wood surfaces under eaves and near downspouts for water damage. Look for dents or mold, mildew, and algae issues on vinyl siding. Use an approved solution to clean your vinyl, using a pressure washer if needed. Check wood siding for any damage that can leave it susceptible to pests.
Check the Foundation
Walk around your home’s exterior, checking the foundation walls, concrete, and masonry for any cracks, heaving, or other signs of deterioration. Have a professional evaluate and repair any loose mortar between bricks or large cracks in driveways and walkways.
Inspect Exterior Caulking
Remove any deteriorated caulking and fill with fresh caulk. Check all areas around corners, windows, door trim, and thresholds.
Check the Windows and Doors
Check screens for holes and repair as necessary. Look for any damaged frames or hardware. Consider window replacements for excessive damage from winter storms. Tighten all door hinges and check closers.
Inspect Porches and Decks
Clean any leaves or debris that may have accumulated in corners. Check wooden porches and decks for signs of deterioration such as warping or water stains. Remove and replace any loose or rotting boards. Inspect railings on stairways, decks, and porches for loose or broken pieces. Clean and reapply stain to seal the wood. While you’re inspecting these wooden areas, don’t forget to check the condition of any arbors or trellises on your property.
Check Your Heat Pump or Air Conditioning Unit
Now is the time to make sure your cooling system is ready for the hot weather ahead. Remove any leaves and debris around your unit. Clean the unit by hosing it off, changing filters, and checking belts if applicable. Contact an HVAC professional to make sure your unit is in peak working condition.
Inspect Outside Faucets and Sprinklers
Turn on the sprinkler system to make sure it is functioning properly. Check for any broken sprinkler heads, leaky valves, or areas where the lines are exposed. Make sure that faucets are working properly and there are no leaks.
