A Full View of Sliding Windows

If you value wide-open and unobstructed vistas of the outdoors, sliding windows would be a great option for at least some of the rooms in your home. Due to their size and design, they allow a maximum amount of daylight to enter the room.

The best way to envision a sliding window is to imagine a double-hung window turned on its side. The sashes freely move back and forth as opposed to up and down. Typically they are larger in size than double-hung windows and are wider than they are tall.  They also tend to open wider than traditional double-hung windows and allow for more natural ventilation overall.

When folks ask about sliding windows – or, sliders, we boil their advantages down to the following FOUR:

EASE OF OPERATION

If a window is hard to operate, homeowners are less likely to bother opening it. Sliders are known for their easy operation.  Usually, one side slides on rollers while the other pane of glass remains stationary. However, double sliders can be installed for greater versatility.  As long as the window remains well-maintained, sliders can be opened with the push of a finger. They can be perfect for hard to reach places.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Sliding windows can be more efficient than some other types of windows for multiple reasons. Overall, the lack of complicated moving parts allows the window to close tightly and firmly. Sliders offer very effective blocking of air infiltration from outside.  Also the panes employ a combination of low-E coatings, insulating gas between the panes, and non-conductive spacers to insulate against cold air flow.

LOW MAINTENANCE

Fewer moving parts is great for energy efficiency but it is also good news in terms of durability and longevity.  Long term, this style of window has lower maintenance requirements than many other types of windows.  Homeowners can expect sliders to last for many years without presenting any operational issues. Some styles of sliders can even be tilted for effortless cleaning.

UNOBSTRUCTED VIEWS

Back to where we started!  If you want to soak-up the great outdoors, sliding windows are the way to go. Since your eyes take in more from side-to-side than up-and-down, a larger sliding window provides a more natural view of the outside world.

Using slider windows for a replacement window project can also save you money. By design, slider windows are much wider than traditional double hung windows.  Conceivably, one wider slider window might replace a pair or even a row of double-hung windows.

Depending on your lighting, ventilation and structural needs, sliding windows could be a superior option for your home or business.
